Voodoo has been demonized throughout the years, distorting its original purpose. After its syncretism with Catholicism, it became an important part of Louisiana's culture. It is not a religion meant to conjure evil or take someone's soul like its stereotypes depict. Instead, it is a religion meant to heal others, bring good fortune, and build relationships with spirits that will guide you. There were 331,726 enslaved people in Louisiana before the civil war, and this religion brought them the hope of a better future.
